After prying ourselves away from Hong Kong, we traveled with Air Asia (like an Asian Easy-Jet, not to be confused with rip-off Ryan-scare) which was pretty relaxing. Bangkok was hot and humid, with more westerners and weirdos than we had seen the entire trip. Khao San road was as tacky as expected and you could not move five meters without having some bit of tat shoved in your face. They tout for restaurant business in a ruthless fashion, a competition in who can shout louder breaks out each time you pass neighboring places. We did find some little gem places to eat though, the food here is exceptionally good.
The various bugs we didn't try but pretty much all other street food was on, as they cooked it all fresh and right in front of you. The stalls were always clean, so stomachs were in good order the next day.
It was the Kings birthday when we arrived in Bangkok, so there were floats and street stalls everywhere. Leah looked like an easy target to some local school girls who duly sold us some nice doughnuts.
I think I ate from six street stalls that evening - the food was so good I could not stop. This was about number three.
We walked in 35 degree heat to the temples south of the tourist area, where we found the Wat Po temples where the reclining Buddha lives.
The tuk-tuk drivers think they can charge what ever they want, insist they take you on a journey with a stop at a shop where you are forced to buy some crap you don't need and are happy to let a sale go if they don't get their price. I don't know how they make any money as you just see them sat around lying in the back of their tuk-tuks. We found the cabbies to be much more reasonable and were willing to negotiate.
The reclining Buddha was absolutely huge. The whistle stop tour of Bangkok only lasted a few days, but we were both glad to be moving on. A 12 hour bus journey awaited us to get across to Cambodia.
